Mt Buffalo Hazelnuts is one of Australia's largest producing hazelnut properties. We have 4,000 mature hazelnut trees, situated on over 50 acres, at the base of Mt Buffalo in the beautiful Buckland Valley, near Bright in North East Victoria. Our annual harvest generally ranges from 6-10 tonnes per year.
David Batt and Caroline King are the owners of the farm and business, which were established in 1994 and have expanded and developed from that time onwards. Since 2006 Mt Buffalo Hazelnuts has cracked, roasted and packaged all of its produce on site, selling the fresh kernels in attractive packaging to a range of quality restaurants, gourmet food retailers and confectioners, both local and Australia wide.
The property’s sub-alpine environment is ideal for growing quality hazelnuts. The crisp winter months provide the trees with the 500 chilling hours required for optimum nut development, our sheltered site in the lee of Mt Buffalo protects the trees from damaging winds, and we enjoy an annual rainfall of around 1,000mm.
Our principal variety, Oregon Barcelona, produces a high quality and consistent kernel, suitable for consuming alone as a table nut or for use in both sweet and savoury products. The naturally roasted hazelnuts from our pristine environment have a rich aroma and a fresh, full taste that is in marked contrast to the more readily available imported nuts that so many people have become used to.
